Labor reform Vs Unions Vs Management

In a world where no one is selfish, we don't need laws.
But that's not the case unfortunately.

We need laws to ensure that the weak are protected from the strong.
But why the strong have to be selfish in the first place?

The "Strong" to remain so need to be selfish.
Or selfishly they want to remain strong.

The unions need to come in to rescue the weak.
They also selfishly want to get established themselves.

Union uses its own strength selfishly to help either party based on what suits them.
In either case strong and union fight it out.
But Strikes and lockout do not help weak.

Nobody benefits.
weak remain weak.

We study law and IR trying to find mistakes.

We do not respect labour, By labour I do not mean workmen 2(s).
I mean that we look down upon labour as it is an abundant resource.
We waste abundantly available resource, price it low, disrepect it.

In another economy where labour price is expensive we respect it more.
So should reforms set a very high minimum wage rate. Say Rs 5000 a month.
Just to get respect if not anything else.

Repercussions will be mass unemployment and inflation in the short run.
But just like people adjust to any hike in sugar price, This hike accompanied with our own salary hike will help overall picture.

It is a far dream, but to solve our core problems and protect the weak, a major relook at ensuring that organized and unorganized workers earn a basic pay that ensures a good standard of living.

After writing upto this point I remember the village I visited in the deep interiors of Jharkhand. No electricty, No food, No hygiene, No future.. where a whole village of 50 people would not have Rs 5000. And I wish that all in my country earn Rs 5000 a basic pay.

Being far from reality is easy. Sitting in a room with AC working and with a laptop, I can write anything, But in the real world there is not much I can change.

So atleast can I ask the Strong to not be selfish and make sure that the lowest wage earner gets a higher pay. Not celebrate the exploits of the exploiter whose performace is measured on cost savings achieved by holding back pay of the weak.

At least the law can come upto a point where the law punishes the exploiter. And I wait for my dream of high std of living for some more time.

  1. I guess, in a country like India, where the gap between the weak and the strong is a very big one, and the 'strong is the strongest' holds better in India than anywhere else in the world, I guess strong laws need to be enforced to bring about socialism.
